The 2010 Frost & Sullivan award for Enabling Technology in MEMS accelerometers has been awarded to Colibrys SA. The company has been recognised for its development and exploitation of high precision MEMS based capacitive accelerometer products.
Precision navigation aids are essential for aviation and smart munitions, as well as in autonomous land vehicles, robotics, and personal locators. The solution of choice has been the highest precision inertial measurement units (IMUs) which provides good performance but tax the rest of the system budgets, including cost (which runs into thousands of dollars), power, and size. Hence, systems designers have begun to re-examine their approach to guidance-system design, primarily because of an order-of-magnitude savings in cost, along with attractive size and power advantages. The challenge for designers is to reallocate system performance budgets and to design-in additional performance rather than relying solely on the core IMU. The cost advantages would open up many new application opportunities.

Siemens Mobility and Colibrys announced today that Colibrys’ MEMS accelerometers have been successfully qualified for the latest generation of German ICE high speed trains. The Velaro D train is the fourth generation of interoperable high-speed trains made by Siemens using distributed traction and the first integrating innovative bogie monitoring systems.
Future train systems are looking to reduce maintenance costs, facilitate repair planning whilst at the same time improving passenger and driver safety and comfort. Siemens has developed a bogie monitoring system that detects wear within bearings, shafts, brakes or wheels and identifies any potential bogie instability that could provoke an accident.

Sean Neylon, formerly Vice President - Microsystems within CSEM, will head up Colibrys as CEO supported by an experienced MEMS industrial management team. Colibrys specialises in the production of innovative custom MEMS products including micro-magnetic MEMS chips for industrial printing presses; micro-optical components for the telecoms and semiconductor equipment markets and micro-mechanical accelerometers for inertial navigation applications. New product developments are focused on Optical MEMS components for telecommunications; radiation detectors for emerging medical imaging and biotech applications. The new company is recognised worldwide as a leading source for the design development and production of custom silicon based MEMS products.
