Dynamic platform stabilization
When it comes to acquiring a target or ensuring the delivery of a payload, it is essential for mobile platforms to have a reliable reference system that maintains a constant orientation of the equipment, regardless of external factors such as the motion of the vehicle the platform is mounted on. As such, stabilization is key when working with such instruments.
Let’s take a UAV-mounted targeting camera for example, an instrument mounted on a platform that has to endure through perturbations such as strong gusts of wind and parasitic movement of the UAV. Without proper stabilization, the images shot with this camera might be blurry or out of frame, rendering the precise acquisition of a target nearly impossible.
Gyro stabilized platforms
Platforms were traditionally stabilized mechanically using motors that would compensate for the movement of the platform. However, the emergence of high-performance gyroscopes specifically designed for stabilizing mobile mounts rendered this practice obsolete. The ideal gyro for such tasks should have high shock survivability, relatively low bias and a very low noise so that they can be used directly in combat. High-end gyros for platform stabilization include vibrating gyros, fiber-optical gyros (FOGs) and ring laser gyros (RLGs), the first operating based on Coriolis force and the two latter of which operate under the Sagnac Effect, exploiting the properties of light.
The Colibrys solution
Our recommended sensor for this application is the GM1000 Module, a packaged version of the GS1000 Gyro housed in a miniature container with all its electronic components. Each GM1000 gyro is factory-calibrated and compensated for temperature effects in order to provide high-accuracy differential analogue output voltage or a 24-bit digital output through RS422 interface. Powered by a single 5 to 18Vdc supply for seamless integration, this unit has already proven operational in such demanding applications as remotely controlled weapon stations, camera platform stabilizations, electro-optical platform stabilization with MTBF of 1.000.000 hours.
